Clinical Evaluation of Fluconazole(Diflucan) in the Treatment of Vaginal Candidiasis.


Abstract
A clinical evaluation about effectiveness of fluconazole(Diflucan) therapy in vaginal candidiasis was performed in 34 patients who visited Department of Obstetrics and Gyneconlogy, Chonnam University Hospital from January 1,1990 to May 31, 1990.
The mean age of the patients was 35.5 years (range 23 to 52 years) and the mean body weight was 56.5kg(range 45 to 72kg) and the mean height was 160 cm(range 150 to 175 cm). The most frequently found organism was candida albicans(91.1%), and 85.2% of patients revealed no organism on culture at 5-9 days follow-up. After complete treatment, symptoms such as pururitus, vaginal discharge and burning sensation were subsided in 93. 3%, 90.6% and 90.0% of patients. Cure rate which was evaluated by organism on culture and clinical symptoms and signs after treatment was 85.2%. There were no undesirable side effects of the drug or laboratory abnormalities after treatment.
Fluconazole may become the orally active antifungal capable of treating vaginal candidiasis with single-day therapy.
